This recipe for hearty, cheese-topped stuffed shells has been a beloved favorite in my family for generations. Tender pasta shells filled with a rich, savory ground beef and tomato sauce bring warmth and comfort to any dinner table.
Ingredients
1 lb ground beef
1 medium onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
1 can (6 oz) tomato paste
1 tsp dried basil
1 tsp dried oregano
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 box (12 oz) jumbo pasta shells
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Fresh parsley, for garnish
Instructions
Preheat & Prep: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
Make the Sauce: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat. Add the diced onion and minced garlic, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes.
Simmer: Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat and let the sauce simmer for 15-20 minutes.
Cook the Pasta: While the sauce simmers, cook the pasta shells according to package directions until al dente. Drain and rinse briefly with cool water.
Assemble: Spoon a thin layer of sauce into the bottom of the baking dish. Stuff each shell with the beef mixture and arrange them in the dish. Pour any remaining sauce over the shells.
Top & Bake: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly over the top. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serve: Let cool for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve warm.
Tips & Variations
Vegetarian: Replace beef with 2-3 cups of finely chopped mushrooms or a plant-based ground alternative.
Extra Cheesy: Mix 1 cup of ricotta or cottage cheese into the beef filling, or add grated Parmesan on top before baking.
Spicy Kick: Add ½ tsp of red pepper flakes to the sauce with the other dried herbs.
Enjoy this taste of family tradition with your loved ones.
