Slow Cooker 4-Ingredient Apple Butter
Makes about 4 cups
Ingredients
6 pounds apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
2 cups granulated sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
Instructions
Place the sliced apples into the slow cooker. Add the sugar, cinnamon, and cloves, stirring to combine.
Cover and cook on low for 10 hours, stirring occasionally, until the mixture is thickened and dark brown.
Uncover and continue cooking on low for an additional 2 hours.
Use an immersion blender to puree the apple butter until smooth, or carefully transfer to a blender and puree in batches.
Allow to cool, then store in airtight containers in the refrigerator. For longer storage, process in a water bath.
A Brief Background
Apple butter has its roots in colonial America, where it was a practical way to preserve the fall apple harvest. This slow cooker version simplifies the process, letting you create a rich, deeply flavored spread at home—with full control over sweetness and spice.
Serving Ideas
Enjoy it spread on toast, biscuits, pancakes, or waffles. It pairs wonderfully with cheese on a charcuterie board, makes a sweet glaze for roasted meats, or adds a spiced twist to sandwiches.
Variations & Tips
For deeper flavor, add a splash of vanilla extract or a pinch of nutmeg.
Reduce sugar to 1.5 cups, or substitute honey or maple syrup for a less-sweet version.
Add ground ginger or increase the cloves for more spice.
Experiment with apple varieties—mixing tart and sweet apples can enhance the final flavor and texture.
