Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 3½ hours (HIGH) or 5–6 hours (LOW)
Rest Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: ~3¾ hours
Servings: 8
Calories: ~340 per serving

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs frozen steak fries (do not thaw)

  • 1 packet (1 oz) dry ranch dressing mix

  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese, divided

  • ½ cup bacon bits (or crumbled cooked bacon), divided

  • Nonstick cooking spray (for the slow cooker)

Instructions

  1. Prep the cooker – Lightly coat the inside of a 4–6 quart slow cooker with nonstick spray to prevent sticking.

  2. Build the base – Pour the frozen steak fries directly into the cooker and spread them into an even layer.

  3. Season – Sprinkle the dry ranch dressing mix evenly over all the fries.

  4. Add the good stuff – Scatter about 1½ cups of the shredded cheddar and half of the bacon bits over the top.

  5. Cook undisturbed – Cover and cook on HIGH for 3–3½ hours or LOW for 5–6 hours. Resist the urge to lift the lid during cooking—trapped steam is key to tender, creamy potatoes.

  6. Stir and bind – Once the fries are fork-tender, gently stir everything from the bottom up until the mixture becomes creamy and cohesive.

  7. Finish with flair – Sprinkle the remaining cheese and bacon over the top, replace the lid, and let it sit for 5–10 minutes to melt into a glorious golden topping.

  8. Rest and serve – Let the dish rest for about 5 minutes before serving warm.

Chef’s Notes

  • Boost it: Garnish with fresh chopped green onions or a dollop of sour cream for extra brightness.

  • Perfect pairings: This hearty side shines alongside grilled steaks, smoked sausage, or your favorite BBQ mains.

  • Make it your own: Swap in pepper jack for a spicy kick, or add a pinch of smoked paprika before cooking for deeper flavor.

    Enjoy your effortlessly decadent spuds!
