Grated ginger, onion, garlic and lemon juice

Ginger, Onion, Garlic, and Lemon Remedy for Respiratory Relief

When cold weather settles in or our immune system needs a little extra support, respiratory infections, sinusitis, and nasal congestion can quickly disrupt our well-being. Over the years, I've come to rely on a simple, natural mixture that's been used for generations: grated ginger, onion, garlic, and lemon juice. This ancient combination works gently but effectively to clear the airways, loosen mucus, calm coughing, and reduce sinus inflammation—all from the inside out.

Each ingredient brings something powerful to the table. Garlic contains allicin, a natural compound with antibiotic and antiviral properties. Onion provides quercetin, a flavonoid that helps clear the airways and reduce inflammation. Ginger, with its gingerols, acts as a natural anti-inflammatory and expectorant. And lemon offers a bright dose of vitamin C to strengthen the immune system and support detoxification. Together, they create a remedy that's far greater than the sum of its parts.

Ingredients

  • 1 piece fresh ginger (about 5 cm), peeled and grated

  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped or crushed

  • 3 cloves garlic, crushed into a paste

  • Juice of 1 large lemon

  • 1 glass warm water (250 ml)

  • 1 tablespoon pure honey (optional, for milder flavor)

Preparation

  1. Peel and grate the fresh ginger.

  2. Crush the garlic cloves until they form a smooth paste.

  3. Finely chop the onion or pulse it briefly in a small blender.

  4. Place all the prepared ingredients into a glass container or jar.

  5. Add the fresh lemon juice and warm water. Stir well to combine.

  6. Let the mixture sit for at least 30 minutes before using. This resting time allows the ingredients to infuse and their beneficial compounds to blend.

  7. If the flavor feels too strong, stir in a tablespoon of pure honey before serving.

How to Use

For decongestion and internal cleansing:
Take one tablespoon on an empty stomach each morning and another tablespoon before bed for 7 consecutive days.

For colds or acute sinusitis:
Strain the mixture and drink it warm, twice a day (morning and night), until symptoms improve.

For prevention and immune support:
Take one tablespoon daily on an empty stomach for 15 days out of the month.

As a steam inhalation:
Pour the prepared mixture into a bowl of hot water. Lean over the bowl, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the steam deeply for about 10 minutes. This helps clear sinuses and open congested airways.

Duration of Use

  • For active congestion or infection: 7 to 10 days

  • For prevention: 15 days per month

This remedy is potent, so it's best used in cycles rather than continuously to avoid stomach irritation.
