Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 20-25 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients
For the Burgers:
1½ pounds ground beef (80/20 or 85/15 recommended)
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon black pepper
For the Topping:
8 ounces cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
1 small onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter, cut into small pieces
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or ½ teaspoon dried thyme)
4 slices Swiss cheese
Salt and pepper, to taste
For Serving:
4 hamburger buns
Optional toppings: lettuce, tomato, ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise
Kitchen Equipment
Large mixing bowl
Heavy-duty aluminum foil
Baking sheet (if baking in the oven)
Grill or campfire (optional)
Instructions
1. Preheat Your Cooking Method
For the oven: Preheat to 400°F (200°C).
For the grill: Preheat to medium-high heat (about 400-450°F).
For a campfire: Let the fire burn down to hot coals.
2. Prepare the Foil Packets
Tear off four large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil, each about 12-14 inches long. (If using standard foil, double up the sheets for extra strength.)
3. Make the Burger Patties
In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just incorporated—do not overwork the meat. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into ½-inch thick patties.
4. Assemble the Packets
Place one burger patty in the center of each foil sheet. Top each patty evenly with sliced mushrooms and onions. Sprinkle with fresh thyme and season the vegetables lightly with salt and pepper. Dot the top of each with a few small pieces of butter.
5. Seal the Packets
Bring the two long sides of the foil together and fold them over several times to create a tight seal. Then, fold in the open ends, ensuring the packet is completely closed. This traps the steam and keeps the burgers juicy.
6. Cook the Packets
Oven: Place packets on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes.
Grill: Place packets directly on the grill grates and cook for 20-25 minutes, flipping once halfway through.
Campfire: Place packets on hot coals or a grill grate over the fire for 20-25 minutes, flipping once.
7. Add the Cheese
Carefully open one packet to check for doneness (burgers should reach 160°F internally). Place one slice of Swiss cheese on top of each patty and close the packet loosely. Let rest for 2-3 minutes, allowing the cheese to melt from the residual heat.
8. Serve
Carefully open the packets (watch for hot steam!) and transfer the burgers to buns. Top with your favorite condiments and enjoy immediately.
Tips & Variations
Don't Overcook: Burgers will continue cooking slightly after being removed from heat, so take care not to overdo them.
Add Bacon: For an extra savory twist, add a couple of cooked bacon strips to each packet before sealing.
Low-Carb Option: Skip the bun and serve the burger and mushrooms over a bed of fresh greens or roasted vegetables.
Make It a Meal: Add halved small potatoes or carrot sticks to the packet for a complete one-packet dinner.
Enjoy your delicious, cheesy, and perfectly cooked mushroom Swiss burgers
